Line Text Generator — Strikethrough, Underline & Slash Fonts
A line text generator adds Unicode combining marks to your text that appear as lines through, above, or below each letter. Strikethrough, underline, double underline, overline, slash-through — these are all combining characters from the Unicode standard, not font formatting. The result pastes as plain text into any platform that supports Unicode.
Unicode blocks behind line text
Combining Diacritical Marks (U+0300–U+036F) is the primary source for line effects:
- U+0305 — Combining Overline — adds a line above:
ā̅ - U+0332 — Combining Low Line — adds an underline:
a̲ - U+0336 — Combining Long Stroke Overlay — the standard strikethrough:
a̶ - U+0334 — Combining Tilde Overlay — wavy line through the middle:
a̴ - U+0338 — Combining Long Solidus Overlay — forward slash through:
a̸ - U+20E5 — Combining Reverse Solidus Overlay — backward slash through:
a⃥
Combining Diacritical Marks for Symbols (U+20D0–U+20FF) contains the double underline and some arrow-based combining characters used in more decorative line styles.
The double underline effect (H̳e̳l̳l̳o̳) uses U+0333 — Combining Double Low Line, which draws two lines beneath each character.

Where line text gets used
Discord — strikethrough is natively supported in Discord markdown (~~text~~), but Unicode strikethrough works differently — it renders in usernames, nicknames, and server names where markdown doesn't apply. Unicode strikethrough is the only option in contexts that don't support formatting.
Instagram bios — underline and overline styles add structure to bios without using emoji as dividers. A section label in overlined text reads as a heading within the bio's single text field.
Twitter / X — strikethrough text in tweets is a common rhetorical device online (implying something was "almost" said, or correcting something with humorous intent). Unicode strikethrough works where markdown doesn't.
Sarcasm and irony markers — strikethrough has become an informal convention for ironic or sarcastic statements in online text. I totally love̶ meetings reads clearly as sarcasm.
Editing and corrections — showing a correction inline: the event is on Friday̶ Saturday communicates a change without removing the original text.
Gaming usernames — slash-through and overline styles create distinctive display names. Less common than bold or symbolic styles but recognizable.
Reddit and forums — strikethrough (both markdown and Unicode) is widely used in comments for crossed-out jokes, corrections, and layered meaning.
Choosing between line styles
Strikethrough (U+0336) — the most semantically established style. Implies deletion, correction, or irony in most contexts online.
Tilde strikethrough — wavy version of strikethrough. Less common, slightly more playful or chaotic in feel.
Underline — emphasis. Less common online than bold because most platforms handle underlining differently (it often implies a link), but as plain Unicode text it's unambiguous.
Overline — less familiar to most readers, which makes it feel more decorative than functional. Good for bios and stylized labels.
Slash-through — visually striking. Reads as crossing out or cancellation, similar to strikethrough but more aggressive looking.
Double underline — strong emphasis. Draws more attention than single underline. Good for short labels.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does strikethrough text work?
Strikethrough text uses Unicode combining characters — specifically U+0336 (Combining Long Stroke Overlay) or U+0335 (Combining Short Stroke Overlay) — attached to each letter. The combining mark renders as a horizontal line through the character without changing the underlying letter.
What is the difference between strikethrough and tilde text?
Strikethrough uses a straight horizontal combining mark (U+0336), while tilde text uses U+0334 (Combining Tilde Overlay), which creates a wavy line through the letters. Both are combining characters that attach to the preceding base character.
Does overline text copy and paste correctly?
Yes. Overline text uses U+0305 (Combining Overline), a standard Unicode combining character. It pastes correctly in Discord, Instagram, Twitter, and most apps that render Unicode text.
Can I use line text in Discord?
Yes. Discord renders Unicode combining characters including overline, underline, and strikethrough overlays. Note that Discord also has its own markdown strikethrough (~~text~~), which is different from the Unicode combining character version.
Why does my line text look different on different devices?
Combining characters are rendered by the platform font, and different fonts handle combining mark positioning differently. The characters are identical — only the visual rendering varies by font and platform.
